On 19th May 2010 Stonham Barns Golf Centre celebrated becoming the first non-affiliated golf facility in Suffolk to be awarded the prestigious EGU/ EWGA RangeMark accreditation. The RangeMark award has been developed by the EGU/ EWGA specifically for standalone ranges and is based on the successful GolfMark accreditation aimed at affiliated golf clubs. The RangeMark accreditation process ensures that facilities reach a nationally required standard in areas surrounding Participation, Environment and Child Protection and Duty of Care.
Steven Peet, EGU/ EWGA Regional Development Officer for the East of England commented, “I think Stonham Barns is a fantastic place for anybody to start golf and learn the game. The centre offers a well equipped 28 bay driving range and a 9 hole par 3 course that is ideal to test out your skills. It is also an especially great place for families to learn and play golf together. I am delighted to be able to award Stonham Barns Golf Centre with the EGU/ EWGA RangeMark award and ensure they are now nationally recognised as a junior and beginner golf facility”.
Stonham Barns is also one of the Golf Foundation’s Community Golf Roots Centres and places a large focus on junior development, holding regular subsidised group coaching sessions and competitions, providing wonderful opportunities for all children in the local area. Tony Dobson, Head PGA Professional and Proprietor of Stonham Barns Golf Centre said “We pride ourselves on the opportunities we offer for junior and beginner golfers here and aim to provide a relaxed, fun and safe environment in which to learn golf and develop your game. I am thrilled that we have achieved the EGU/ EWGA RangeMark award and am proud of the efforts of everybody at Stonham Barns.”

1005-sb-junior-comp-small.jpgJACK CUTHBERT WINS STONHAM JUNIOR FLAG TOURNAMENT
Jack Cuthbert, a 10 year old member of Thorpness Golf Club achieved a victory in the Stonham Barns May Flag Tournament, reaching the 11th hole with his 36th shot. The Stonham Flag Tournament is run on the same basis as the Wee Wonders where a player has 36 shots and wherever their 36th shot finishes they place a flag in the ground. Jack, whose handicap is 24, is a member of the newly formed Suffolk Junior Coaching Academy which is funded by England Golf through the Suffolk Golf Partnership.

In 2nd place was Jaimee Hurren, an 11 year old member of St Clements Golf Club, who reached the 10th fairway and in 3rd place was Amrit Hayer, an 11 year old from Copeswood Golf Club who travelled from the West Midlands to play. He reached the 9th hole.

The Under 10 age group category was won by 9 year old Stonham Barns member, Dylan Beadsworth, who reached the 9th fairway. In 2nd place was Ricky Hurren, an 8 year old member of St Clements Golf Club who finished on the 8th fairway after his 36 shots. In 3rd place in this category was Shane Murphy, a 10 year old member of Felixstowe Golf Club, who reached the 7th green.

In the under 8 age category we had four 8 year olds and two 6 year olds. This age category was won by Taylor Adams, an 8 year old member of Gorleston Golf Club, who reached the 8th hole with his 36 shots, a very good result. In 2nd place was Ryan Turnbull, an 8 year old member of Cretingham Golf Club reaching the 8th fairway.  In 3rd place and maybe the best result of the day was Mary Cuthbert, a 6 year old member of Thorpness Golf Clubs who reached the 7th hole with her 36 shots.

The prizes were sponsored by the Golf Direct Store at Stonham Barns and presented by Tony Dobson, the PGA Professional at Stonham Barns Golf Centre.
