By the Numbers: Callaway golf shoot in Las Vegas
The buttoned-up game of golf gets a sexy, only-in-Vegas makeover in a recent series of TV spots for Callaway's 2012 line of goods. Helmed by music video maven Joseph Khan (U2, Lady Gaga, 50 Cent) with input from Callaway's newly-named Creative Director Justin Timberlake, Callaway's "Epic Demo" campaign will see Phil Mickelson, Alvaro Quiros and others attempting shots in, over and around iconic Las Vegas landmarks.

Justin Timberlake, named in December as Callaway’s creative director, helped craft a new marketing campaign for the golf equipment maker that teed off last weekend.  Timed to coincide with the Farmers Insurance Open, Callaway is hoping the campaign will get it out of the rough it has been in since the 2008 recession.

Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts is leading the European Tour in driving distance after averaging 304 yards off the tee at the Abu Dhabi Championship. Colsaerts, who finished T24 at the tournament, uses a 9.5-degree Callaway Razr Hawk driver. He has averaged 308 yards off the tee with the driver in the 2012 season.

Golf products maker Callaway is ramping up its mobile strategy by sponsoring the PGA Tour’s new iPad application. The PGA Tour HD app gives golf fans a behind-the-scenes look at live coverage of tournaments and PGA Tour events. The app is available for free download in Apple’s App Store.

In 2007, the ACSL joined with the Callaway Golf Company in a collaborative effort to improve Callaway drivers with short fiber technology. Callaway wanted to improve its bladder molded laminated construction on the Diablo Octane driver.  The RAZR Hawk driver, which was designed using the new technology, also takes advantage of the material’s shaping properties in the head, shaping an intricate pattern that improves the aerodynamics of the club.

Titleist unveils four new golf balls

At the PGA Merchandise Show, held Jan. 26-28 in Orlando, Fla., Titleist introduced two new NXT Tour models – NXT Tour and NXT Tour S. Joining the NXT Tour party were two other new Titleist balls, a reconfigured DT SoLo and an interesting distance ball called Velocity. The S version is slightly softer, but the NXT Tour also feels soft while generating even more distance than the previous NXT Tour.

The latest entry into the iron category from Nike Golf is the VR_S line of clubs, introduced at the recent PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla. The irons features what Nike calls NexCOR, or a variable face-thickness technology. The concept is to maximizes distance for the widest range of players through the face thickness design.

Palmer Leads in Phoenix with Odyssey Putter

Ryan Palmer was back in his comfort zone with his trusted old putter model in the first round of the Phoenix Open. Palmer finished off a 7-under 64 at dusk to take the lead Thursday in the suspended first round. Palmer switched back to the Odyssey putter after missing the cuts in his previous two starts this year.
