More Information
Dave Pelz, who has worked with some of the game's greatest professional including short game king Phil Mickelson, believes the dramatic TV coverage and Bradley's eventual three-hole play-off victory over the faltering Jason Dufner, will create an enormous amount of interest in long putters. Pelz says the stance forced upon belly-putter users, whether they be top-rank professionals or weekend hackers, prevents them from committing the two cardinal sins of putting. He says when you anchor the shaft in your tummy, and then you swing the putter, you can not break your wrists, solving problem number one. The next biggest mistake golfers make during the putting stroke is rotating their forearms which, says Pelz, comes from moving the torso during the swing instead of the arms. Belly putters also prevent that happening, he points out. Forearm rolling putts the ball on the wrong path while wrist-breaking affects touch and makes stroking the ball the right distance difficult to achieve. The Belly Putter eliminates this and provides the player with a solid, more consiatnt stroke.Pelz has done trials involving hundreds of students from his six teaching schools in order to try and determine which putter, conventional, belly or the Broomstick, gives golfers the most accurate stroke. The results were not a surprise to him, the best putts came from the belly putter. We agree with Pelz and we are going to provide details of the brands of belly puuters that are available and some details of the specification each player should be looking for when decided on which belly putter to purchase.if you are going to get the best results it is important that belly putter you will be using has the correct specifications for you. Specifically, the most important custom fit specifications need to be the length, lie angle and head weight. The loft should be the same as all putters which is between three and five degree. The head design that works best for most belly putter golfers is one that is center shafted alhough standard end shafted putters have had some successes and therefore this will be down to personal preference.
Here we deals with these three requirement as follows:Length
The length of the Belly Putter is very important as the butt end of the grip is anchored in your belly button (or in that region) and this dictates how far over you will bend at the waist in taking your stance. The corrcet length would allow the golfer to take his stance and have his eyes directly over the ball. The length range for belly putters generally falls between 39 inches and 43 inches. You can get fitted by a PGA Professional to determine the correct length or you can measure this length yourself using a standard putter with a shaft or stick to help you measure the distance between the top of your standard putter and your belly, rembering that your eyes should be over the ball when taking this mearsurement. Add this length to the length of your standard putter and this would be the length of belly putter your would require.Lie Angle
Now that the length has been determined you need to determine that the lie angle is right so that the putter sits squarely on the ground when you setup to the ball. If the toe of the putter is up in the air at impact you will have a tendency to pull the putt and conversely if the toe is down at impact, the tendency will be to push the putt. Why have any of these bad variables in your putter when it is so easy to eliminate them? Even on a putter you have purchased the lie angle can be changed and this can be done by your local PGA Professional.Weight
Belly putters use heavier heads than conventional putters. The belly putter will not work very well with a conventionally weighted putter head. If this is the putter head that you intend to use, get ready to do some serious lead taping to increase the head weight significantly. The range for belly putter head weights generally falls between 380 to 440 grams. It depends on feel and personal preference when deciding on this. For reference a conventional putters would have a head weight of between 320 and 360 grams and Long Putters are generally over 500 grams. What putter to buy? We are searching to find a range of top Belly Putters from the top brand names and as these become available we will include them in this category.
